Winter 2023

Anna Dixon-Smith – 19th to 25th October
A Room of Ones Own
Anna’s work in this exhibition is a reflection of her love and connection with the natural world around her. Her richly coloured, expressive still life oil paintings of fish or seasonal flowers, grown in her garden or foraged from hedgerows, combined with much loved domestic items, celebrate the beauty of everyday life.
Drawing has always been central to her practice and will be the starting point for any painting. Her charcoal drawings are often large, expressive and painterly. Anna has a BA(Hons) in Fine Art.
Issey Coe, Bobbie Watchorn, Michelle Watson, Shirley Easton – 2nd to 8th November
Issy Coe tries to capture atmosphere and her passion for the environment in her paintings. She works in watercolour, pastels, oils and acrylics and enjoys painting en plein aire when time allows, but also collects a lot of her own photographic reference material for use in the studio.
Bobbie Watchorn’s work is quite unique – mainly interpretive and figurative animal ceramic sculptures. Her sculptures are mostly of animals and are inspired by life and she has an amazing ability to express the innate character rather than creating a literal form. Most of Bobbie’s work is ceramic stoneware but she also occasionally works in cold cast bronze.
Michelle Watson has developed a visual representation depicting the modern female, encapsulating all the pressures of life endured; past, present and future. Reality becomes entwined with abstraction, as beauty and scarring unite. A certain beauty in the subtlety of paint strokes defines isolated female forms fusing with the rawness of linen and cotton. As inks, oils and charcoals meet the canvas, the journey of ageing depicted.
Shirley Easton is a relative newcomer to exhibiting her work but has already established a following and has works in a number of private collections. She works in oils, watercolours and pastels and is inspired by the natural world and especially the drama of sea, sky and clouds.

Ray Burgoyne, John Christie, Derek Chambers, David Benefer – 9th to 15th November
This is the first exhibition that brings together the work of four distinguished Suffolk artists each of whom has many years experience in the visual arts. The work selected not only shows the development of their own technical skills but also allows the unique personal vision of each artist to resonate with the other work on display.

Sasha Leech – 16th to 22nd November
'I make landscape paintings and figurative ceramic sculptures. I find I cannot work from photographs. I need to work on the spot, responding to sounds, sunlight, wind and temperature. Being there gives my work the urgency and energy with which I hope to show the excitement of a place. Often drawings and paintings made on location lead to further works made in the studio and in making these, my mind travels back to the original experience. I love the physicality of making art, how materials behave when applied thickly, thinly, quickly or slowly, how paint can bleed, spatter, drip or scumble, how charcoal lines can smudge, crumble, blend or prickle. I love how all these effects themselves suggest the atmospheres and textures of nature.'
Peter Burman – 23rd to 29th November
Peter is a Suffolk based Artist, whose work captures the wonderful atmosphere of the countryside.  He is particularly drawn by the beauty of Suffolk and Norfolk, the lush meadows, River Estuaries and great open skies that these counties are known for.
Peter has had many one man shows at the John Martin Gallery in London and the Upstairs Gallery at the Royal Academy in London.
Peter’s work may be found in private and public collections both in this country and abroad.
Susie Hammond – 30th November to 6th December
Suffolk born artist-illustrator Susie Hammond is known for her prolific intricate ink pen drawings, paintings, and ceramic tiles. She draws her inspiration from her rural surroundings in the Suffolk village she lives and illustrates in. Hares and Suffolk Sheep are amongst her most popular pieces of work. Susie is influenced by nature in all of its forms and local history, myths and legends. For Susie every picture holds a story, it may be a glimpse of a hare on the common or the sheep down on the marshes or a complete fantastical character inspired by the imagery in her thoughts and observations.
Les Dilettantes – 7th to 14th December
Dilettantes: n. from the Latin, delectare, to delight.
And delight we do, in rummaging high and low for decorative antiques and preloved objets, be they in a Suffolk barn, country auction or Paris flea market. Chic and a tad quirky, our wares convey a flavour of our spirit, style and sense of fun.

If you’re looking for some help of the dilettante variety in styling your own home, we’d be delighted to collaborate. We can work entirely with what you already have (you’d be amazed at what can be achieved), and/or help you unearth new pieces. We can also advise on art buying and hanging, paint colours and fabrics. Not full-on decorating, mind - simply some affordable home styling and sourcing with real character and zing.
