Can traditional art be non-traditional? Can it be the alternative to the mainstream? If ever there were an artist that could prove this contradiction true, it’s Pigment.

There are a lot of punk elements to Pigment’s work and herself, “I never thought that I would be a traditional artist one day,” she says, “I always felt modern, contemporary, and radical. I got kicked out of art school in New York because I challenged their belief and value system.”

Despite her radical nature playing a role in her being kicked out of art school, Pigment now finds herself in an unfamiliar role of being labeled a traditional artist. In a digital space, it would be easy to understand any artist using paint and canvas beginning to feel ‘traditional’.

“I always imagine my paintings in the world of modern technology; wondering how relevant my art is in our digital age. This grows out of the apprehension I sense about the development of art and the influence of technology on culture. How can painting reposition itself with image production in our digital age?”

Pigment is asking the right questions, which anyone rebelling against the status quo should do. She makes the case that traditional art could be seen as a counter-movement against popular, mainstream art. As our lives become increasingly reliant and influenced by technology, could we begin to gravitate back towards more analog creations such as acrylic paint on canvas?

True to her nature, Pigment knows who she is and how she fits in the NFT space, “I am not afraid and believe that painting is still possible. The NFT world needs 'traditional' artists - I believe that we should know our tools first before we can freely experiment.”

Pigment’s paintings all are an extension of the rebel spirit that fuels her. Pigment refuses to conform and change her style to an increasingly digital world: incorporating references from music and infamous punk icons Sid and Nancy, using abstract art on canvas with paint and strokes that you can see and feel through your screen, Pigment’s traditional art becomes untraditional in the NFT space.
